My name is Heidi and I am a content creator under the name Costume CO.
25 years ago, I specialized in theatre costume at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada, and earned a bachelor's degree in Technical Theatre Production. I have created and designed costumes for hundreds of Canadian live-event and theatrical productions, as well as TV and film.
I also worked in the corporate and not-for-profit sector through my costume business, Ms. Dress-Up. Some of my clients included the Royal Ontario Museum, The Toronto Zoo, Casaloma, The Government of Ontario, Icelandic Air, and Virgin Mobile.
In 2017 I launched a UA-cam channel looking at the costumes on the big screen and small through the eyes of a costumer. My first video was on the costumes of Cersei Lannister, the gloriously dressed villain in HBO's Game of Thrones.
5 years and 200 videos and livestreams later, I am still dedicating my channel to works in high fantasy, science fiction and historical drama.

great video. This is retrofuturism and also steampunk futurism, which is a lot more than I can say for the post-modern futurism in the new Dune movies!!
Thanks for commenting emad!
At the time sci-fi was all Star Wars sterile white this movie with it's renaissance aesthetic and baroque tech was a breath of fresh air although not appreciated as such today.
Jessica's designs and hairdos are legendary in that Dune movie. Looking vaguely like a Renaissance Tudor figure. She looked both vampy and regal. Of course, Princess Irulan with her hairdo in the intro is an all time classic that throws Princess Leia under the bus... The Guild guys just inspired the Borg aesthetic in Star Trek TNG imo... Atreides uniforms are an all time classic, although I must admit, the Villeneuve version is very good as well and I prefer the stylized Hawk emblem of the Villeneuve version more with victoriously spread wings, resembling an inversed Hiigaran emblem in Homeworld video games. The stillsuits are fantastic in this movie. You add those to the Guild guys, you obtain The Borg !
Hi quo, thanks so much for commenting. Great observations, thank you for commenting.
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. ♥
Thanks Lara!
Gotta time travel to 2028 to get that Dr. Yueh coat
😂
These costumes do look beautiful but I feel like there isn’t enough difference to show the passage of time between HOTD and Game of Thrones. At least not with the Blacks. It feels more as though 50 years have passed not 200.
Yes, agreed.
How did the stillsuit sell in July 2024? That wasn't the impossible date. I think you need to release a corrected version... see 32:00 ("sold at auction for $6000 in July 2024") That's just one date, you also mentioned 2028 as being in the past...
A lot of the costumes were sold in a sale or given away to theatre companies here in Wilmington NC, nice to see them pop up over the past few years.
Thanks so much for sharing Janeiro.
As an Industrial Designer I prefer the multiple color pallets and decorative aesthetics of the ‘84 costumes and architecture, as opposed to the Villanueve monotone, less is more, choices in the new movies clothing and buildings
Hi Ross, thanks so much for commenting. I completely agree.
Gah! Neoprene scuba booties + Actors/Extras x 100 degree heat = A nightmare of stinky, sweaty booties after every day of shooting. That poor wardrobe team! I learned quite a bit from your knowledge-dense Lynch Dune wardrobe deep dive. Thanks!
Thanks Kendrick, yes, that must have been unbearable! Thanks so much for commenting.
Great video! 🌊🏄♂️🪷
Thanks James!
At 8:33 you said 2028 idk if that was intentional or a mistake lol
Hi kleopatra, my apologies, it was 2018: entertainment.ha.com/itm/movie-tv-memorabilia/dean-stockwell-dr-wellington-yueh-harkonnen-admiral-coat-from-dune/a/997051-2650.s
This is one of my all time favorite films, and I recently bought the 30th anniversary steelbook 4K Blu-Ray, and so of course after watching the movie for the millionth time, I went looking for new information about the movie on UA-cam and here I am! Excellent content, thank you so much for this video, I learned a lot of new stuff about the costumes, particularly about Mina and Lucy’s! You have a new subscriber in me, keep the great content coming!
Thanks so much Roger!
Wow to think that the spacing guild were all wearing actually reused body bags that still had remnants left on them is chilling.
Yes, it's pretty gross. I imagine they did try to clean them somewhat.
I prefer the costumes in the 1984 movie. Though I do love Villeneuve’s movies.
Me too!
Yes!!! Cool!!
Yea! fresh Dune content ❤ I really like how beautiful the princess looks in the opening sequence (great idea toi include it in your video).
Hi Jeremy, thank you so much. I will let my editor know, it was his idea. :)
Another excellent breakdown. The Grecian inspired costumes were my favorite. So elegant. I wish Lynch could have done better for the Baron both as a character and costuming. Thanks again Heidi.
Hi Luna, thank you so much. You didn't have to do that. I really appreciate you.
Very enjoyable video! Just a minor correction: several of the auction dates given were in the future.
TY I probably messed it up in the script. 😀
Lynch's Lady Jessica really was Queen of The Drip.
She was!!
Jesus….your knowledge of historical fashion is so encyclopaedic - as well as educational - I feel like I could hold my own at any high couture event. Another feast for the senses. Okay….although there was so much enlightenment, I was here primarily for the stillsuits, a word that still has me yelling out loud in frustration. A few years after the film, the much celebrated British fetish magazine, Skin II ran a tiny advert, practically hidden away in the ‘exotic’ personals section. It detailed that much of the suits in Dune had been constructed from rubber and there were many outfits up for grabs. More over, it seemed like they were being given away! I knew instantly that these had to be the numerous Fremen stillsuits. Although barely 16, I wish to Hell I had chased this lead up. The clandestine nature of the advert, as well as the then underground stance of the publication, seemed very much intended. They obviously intended it to be seen by fetishists. There was indeed an air of both mystique and prurience to the affair. A short time later I saw this 1991 video from the Scots synth group ‘Shamen’. ua-cam.com/video/SpjnzxtZ6Qg/v-deo.htmlsi=kmNUtSEGrjhrKci3 Forget Captain Picard, Patrick Stewart will always be Gurney Halleck in my eyes. He never looked cooler since Leodegrance in ‘Excalibur’. Thanks again for another thought- provoking, superb video!❤️👍🤗🤯
HI Zacetto, thank you so much for commenting and for sharing yout story. As far as my knowlede, I often have some things I recall from working on other shows, but I am lucky and sometime come across a picture, and think, ahah! That's it. Anyway, I am so glad that you love Dune as much as I do.. PS I will do a review of Excalibur in the near future. I think I was 14 or 15 when I saw it and we had to pretend we were of age because it was rated R at the time. Cheers, Heidi.
@@Costume_CO Greetings, Heidi. I think Dune suffered the Bladerunner/The Thing syndrome, in that they were all too ahead of their time to be fully appreciated. I am also a huge fan of John Boorman’s Excalibur. For me, the apotheosis of period armour and the clear practicalities, like the leather buckles at the breast plate to fasten. I cannot wait for your costume analysis. Here’s a bit of trivia that always makes me collapse laughing. Watch this clip paying attention at the 1:28 mark. A knight ascending the scaffold, holding a cudgel in his right hand is clearly smoking a cigarette!!!! You actually see him place it in his visor, take a puff and leave it hanging in his mouth. The knight ahead of him also seems to be indulging, too.🤣 ua-cam.com/video/VKG1hk_Bhzg/v-deo.htmlsi=GPAmbFDIxv4CoY6y Enjoy!
OMG that's hilarious! Thanks for sharing. Now I want to watch the whole movie I wil try to get to it in June.
@@Costume_CO I am glad you liked it. For me Excalibur rang in my tiny mind, “Helen Mirren in medieval dress playing witch?….Me like.” It helped the movie was also superb, too.
Thanks for the excellent video!. I loved the original 1984 Dune when I watched it as a kid, I always thought the visuals and costuming was top notch. The only major downside to me was that the movie seemed to have been squeezed into just a few hours, it really should have been at two movies! (like the new adaptations).
Thanks Jack, appreciate your comment!
Thanks for the credit and link to my site! 🙏
Hi Dune Info, it's my pleasure. Thank you for having such a comprehensive website. PS I followed you on X.
I'd love to get your take on the costumes of the Dune miniseries. Frankly I think they were better- especially Alaia's.
Hi Lazarus, I think I am going tackle that this summer.
I'd lik to see that, too. While the costumes from the miniseries are often slandered for looking "cheap," they're nonetheless quite often otherworldly and imaginative!
During theatrical release, the costumes went on a publicity tour. I saw them up close at a Jordan Marsh in Boston. They were incredibly rich and detailed, with aging to make them look well-worn. But the display was protected by nothing more than a velvet rope, and soon people had ripped off some of the eagle-embossed tunic buttons, and stolen a crysknife out of its sheath.
Thank you for sharing That is really awful that people would do that but at the same time I am not surprised.
😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
I Am diving in to this new post now How could this have been a flop ?!?
Too weird and confusing for most people I guess. But the costumes are iconic. Same design was used in the later Dune computer games as well.
Hi Mark, the studio insisted on a 2 hour cut, but Lynch's film was closer to 5 hours. The Alan Smithee cut (Lynch removed his name) included some of the cut footage. Lynch hasn't released a director's cut that would be more in his vision.
It's got a lot of problems as an adaptation, including clunky exposition and an attempt at duplicating the lengthy internal monologues that characterize the novel...
However, the ambitious production deserves praise. The costume and set designs are exceptionally noteworthy, the effects frequently trippy and eye-popping as they are dated. Finally, Lynch's own stomach-churning body horror flourishes are evident throughout many set pieces.
This film was and is polarizing, and the production was harrowing, but I personally loved it from the first viewing. The costumes and sets were opulent, uniquely presented, and incredibly detailed. Thank you for your analysis! You include behind the scenes stills, and discuss the fabrics and design influences. I love historical content, and your productions are always really interesting Edit: my favorite costumes were those worn by Bene Gesserit Nuns. They were suitably imposing, appropriate as they were the secret driving force manipulating events in the novels
Hi callen, thank you so much for commenting. i love the Bene Gesserit costumes as well!
I agree. It's great how Heidi uses stills and historical connections for the costume designs being discussed are not only educational but most importantly entertaining. I love Heidi's videos.
WOW! The picture of the three women from the 1920s film production the woman all the way on the right is wearing either a headdress very similar to Padme Amadas halo headpiece when she and Anakin were headed back to Naboo!

Emporer Mattress Protector IV.
I think I will print that on a tee-shirt.
I have always been intrigued with Marie Antoinette, and although the movie was not historically correct, it is one of my favorites that I own on DVD and watch periodically because of the beauty portrayed. I love it so much 💟
Thanks Robin, I love it too!
Baron Harkonnens long black Tunica reminds me of Homer Simpsons dress he wears when he gets super fat. 😂 He just needs the baloon hat.
😄 That's awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for this video and the detailed overview of the wigs and costumery. I think the artisans of all did a phenominal job and I have searched the internet until I found this in depth breakdown. I have seen this movie many, many years ago and have only revisited it recently; ad nauseum, because of Gary Oldman's stellar and sensual potrayal of a misunderstood monster who has spent centuries looking for his long lost one true love as evidenced in his dialogue, "I have crossed oceans of time to find you." I was particularly intrigued by Draculas hair design in the scene where Jonathan Harker arrives at his Castle, and how it was fashioned and what was the inspiration for it. Now that I have your in depth analysis, I can emerse myself even deeper into this tale of love and redemption lost and then found. Well done! Thank you so kindly.
Hi Whispslinger, thank you so much for your lovely comment! Warmest regards, Heidi.
For cooper Howard, what is his button up shirt style called pre war? Been looking for jackets, denim jackets, with that stripe that either come up the arm and across the chest like that
Hi Kydra. Do you have a link you can share with me?
@@Costume_CO 14:45 stuff like that.
Hi Kydra, I am hoping to have the shirt maker on the show I will ask him.

Excellent video, many thanks.
Thanks Remington!
Great video! Joffreys coats are straight 🔥
Thank you Eddy. Totally agree about Joffrey.
Excellent! ❤❤❤😊
Thank you! 😃
They can clothes a small country with that many outfits.
Yes, so true!
Princess Irulan is modelling Paco Rabanne.
Just after the movie came out, many Sci-Fi conventions had "Runners" and "Sandmen" doing skits in the hotel hallways....(not allowed anymore sadly). But many of us had such a good time. I was becoming a good costumer myself back then and recreated Jessica's two tone green chiffon dress and dyed a pair of slippers which had a rubber sole on them, so no slipping on slick surfaces. I even had found actual green tights to wear as colored nylons were somewhat popular back then for wearing with office attire. Yup, it was a thing. Granted I was a "green" and didn't _need_ to run, but at some conventions you just had to have fun. I later recreated a film perfect version of a Sandman for my then boyfriend, wish I had both costumes now even if I couldn't fit into Jessica. Makes me want to remake it, but now I'd have to be "clear/white" as a renewed person. Well past any age category, even the movie was far above the ages for the book it is based on. When the Director wanted Michael York and Richard Jordan for the male leads, he ask George Clayton Johnson and William F. Nolan (co-authors of the book) if he could up the ages for the film as the cut off age in the book is 21. Way too young for most experienced actors at the time. I know this as George Clayton Johnson used to come to those early conventions and I hung out with him a lot. There was copious weed smoking and conversation.....what fun! Those fun days are long gone.
Hi Sandra, thank you so much for commenting and sharing your experiences!
@@Costume_CO You're welcome!!! Glad so many people still like the movie even though it's now so "dated" in it's special effects. I forgot to mention Bill Thomas came to one of the early conventions and I was able to meet him and get a signed original costume design for a different movie he had worked on. I still have it somewhere in my collection. Mr. Thomas was very nice and liked my "green" I had made, that's why he gave me a design from a different movie.
Hi Sandra, that is very cool. Thank you for sharing.
Fun fact; The Vault dweller's iconic blue and yellow was chosen in the original 1997 Fallout game simply because they were the least used colors from the limited 256 colors palette at the time, and would really contrast with the rest of the bleak, still irradiated 2102 landscape, a mere 35 years after the 2077 bombs of this alternate future
New subscriber, here. This was the most clinical rundown of the show I've seen yet. It was like a course video for film school, it was so sterile and to the point. Good work, I'll be staying.
Hi driven, oh dear, hope it wasn't boring!
My son and I watched the entire first season in about a week. He is a Fallout game fan and I knew nothing about the game. We both enjoyed the show very much. I really enjoyed the character of the Ghoul and the acting performance of Walton Goggins. All of the main actors did a great job, but Goggins was a phenomenon!
Hi Katie, thanks so much for commenting!
As a long time cosplayer, I absolutly love the costumes in this show! Thanks for this Video. ATM Im working on Cooper Howards Ghoul Version as a Cosplay. Coat, Vest and Pants are nearly done. Tomorrow I will start with the weathering <3
Thanks Anna!
Thanks for the breakdown!
You bet!
